As such, the goal of near modes of the game is to achieve a loftier score or collect sure objects. The player must complete objectives to unlock levels to progress through the game. To score points, the player has to successfully perform and combine aerials, flips, grinds, lips, and manuals, with successful executions adding to the player's score. The point value of the trick is based on time maintained, degrees rotated, number of tricks performed in sequence, performing tricks on specific landmarks on the map, and the number of times the tricks accept been used. Successful tricks also add together to the player's special meter, which, once full, allows for the execution of special tricks which are worth a corking bargain more normal tricks. Bails (falling off the skateboard due to poor landing) attain no points for the attempted trick sequence and reset the special bar to empty.[4]

Even though the game is a remaster of only the get-go two entries, Pro Skater 1 + ii features tricks introduced in later games upward to Tony Militarist's Undercover such as reverts, spine transfers, wall plants, as well equally the abilities to perform enhanced tricks such every bit double flips and to switch between certain trick types such equally grinds, lips and manuals in one sequence.[5] However, information technology is possible to fix the controls dorsum to only featuring maneuvers possible in the original games.[iv] The player tin can besides create their own skater and skate park with the Create-A-Skater and Create-A-Park modes. Development [edit]

Pro Skater 1 + 2 is a remaster of the first two games of the series: Tony Militarist's Pro Skater and Tony Militarist'south Pro Skater two. Trying to capitalize on the growing popularity of skateboarding as a sport, the Tony Militarist'south series of video games started in 1999 with Pro Skater, which was immediately followed past Pro Skater 2 in 2000. Both games, especially Pro Skater two, were extremely well received critically and commercially, spawning i of the almost commercially successful video game franchises of the 2000s, releasing games on a yearly ground for over a decade. All the same, the original licensing bargain betwixt Tony Hawk and Activision expired in 2015 after the release of the poorly reviewed Pro Skater 5, abandoning the franchise for almost 5 years.[15] Pro Skater one + two is the kickoff game released by Activision since the same deal ended, while Hawk partnered with Maple Media to release the contained mobile game Tony Hawk'due south Skate Jam in 2018.[xvi]

In May 2020, Activision announced Tony Militarist's Pro Skater 1 + 2 which was developed by Vicarious Visions, who previously worked on ports for several Tony Hawk games, using Unreal Engine 4.[17] [18] [19] According to Vicarious Visions' primary operating officer Simon Ebejer, the studio obtained Neversoft'southward original handling code and layered it to modernize the treatment, as well as consulting with former employees. The team besides worked on the level geometry to make sure the actor'due south skating lines were the same from the original games. Further, the team had redone all the art avails for the game'south 19 levels to prepare information technology for 4K resolution but otherwise keep the game familiar to players.[10] Vicarious Visions studio head Jen Oneal confirmed that virtually of the licensed songs from the first two games would render.[20] Three tracks from the original two games are not present,[21] [b] while 37 new tracks have been added.[22]

The game is noted to exist Vicarious Visions' last work as a subsidiary of Activision before beingness merged into Blizzard Entertainment in on January 22, 2021.[23] It was released for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series 10/S on March 26, 2021,[24] while a Nintendo Switch version was released on June 25 of that year.[25]

The game changes the proper noun of the "mute grab" aerial trick to the "Weddle catch" so as to honor its original creator, Chris Weddle, according to Hawk.[26] The flim-flam received its original proper name in the 1980s past skateboarders who referred to Weddle as the "repose, mute guy". Its original proper noun is misleading, as Weddle is hearing dumb but does not lack speech.

Marketing [edit]

Since its announcement trailer on May 12, 2020, the game was extensively marketed by Activision.[17] To attain this, Activision opened several social media accounts for the game on Instagram and YouTube, amongst others, where additional trailers and endorsement videos by the featured skaters were published until and subsequently the game's release. Reminiscent of the first entry in the series, a new "Warehouse Demo" was released on August 14 for all people who had pre-ordered the game.[27]

The game was made available with several special editions, including the "Digital Palatial Edition", which included boosted skins, skateboards, clothing options, as well as an additional underground grapheme, Ripper; whereas the "Collector'south Edition" also offered an actual skateboard as well every bit other physical merchandise.[9]

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 received "generally favorable" reviews, except for the PlayStation 5 version, which received "universal acclaim", co-ordinate to review aggregator Metacritic.[28] [29] [31] [30] [32] [33] IGN chosen it a "tremendous turnaround" from Tony Hawk'due south Pro Skater v, and stated that it was "difficult to believe that they share fifty-fifty a shred of Deoxyribonucleic acid",[38] while Game Informer noted that the newest entry ensured the series had a "bright time to come" one time again.[35]

In his review for Destructoid, Chris Carter lauded Vicarious Visions for their attention to item and named the game the most accomplished HD release of the series yet, calling it "genius" to introduce all the mechanics from later games all at once and incorporate them into the level, thus far surpassing Tony Militarist's Pro Skater HD, likewise citing the vastly improved graphics and visual updates to the levels when compared to the latter.[34] Writing for Game Informer, Brian Shea had the same feelings towards the game, claiming that, "past masterfully blending old with new, [the game] lands on a sugariness spot", listing its truthfulness to the originals while at the same fourth dimension adding new content, such equally new skaters, songs, and improved controls, equally the game'south biggest force.[35] In a detailed comparison of the former games to the remaster, GameSpot besides noted the new challenge system, immense amount of unlockable cosmetics, and the omission of unnecessary maneuvers introduced in later games equally factors that added immense replay value.[4] Furthermore, the game'southward soundtrack received universal acclaim for its nostalgic value while at the same time incorporating well-chosen new additions.[34] [35] [38] The diverse roster was also lauded, in which Sports Illustrated chosen the game "a beacon of diversity and representation".[11]

Several reviews were critical of the multiplayer, citing a lack of options and gameplay modes.[34] Shea noted that the multiplayer "wears sparse fast due to repetitive objectives and an inability to play some of the local multiplayer offerings", challenge that due to this he was unable to play more than than a few rounds at a time.[35] Carter besides named the express amount of levels as a point of critique, challenge that adding stages from Pro Skater 3 would have added significantly more variety and replay value.[34] Another repeatedly criticized attribute were the long loading times when inbound or restarting a level.[4] [37]

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater i + ii has become the fastest-selling game in the franchise, selling ane meg copies in the first 2 weeks.[44] In the United Kingdom, the game was the biggest launch for the franchise since 2003's Tony Militarist's Secret and was the second biggest launch in the franchise overall.[45]
